Charles C. Edwards, MD –
Medical Director & Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Maryland
Dr. Edwards received his education at Duke University,
University of Maryland Medical School, and Yale University for Orthopedic and
Spinal Surgery. From Yale, he returned to the University of Maryland where
he served as Chief of Shock-Trauma Orthopedics, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery for
University of Maryland, and rose to the rank of tenured Professor. He
presently serves as Director of the Maryland Spinal Fellowship program.
Dr. Edwards is among the nation’s most prominent spinal and orthopedic surgeons.
He has developed many new procedures to improve surgical results and conducted
extensive clinical research. Based on this work, Dr. Edwards has published
over 150 articles and chapters, made over 300 presentations at national
meetings, and holds 19 medical patents. Dr. Edwards has served as
President of the Orthopedic Trauma Association, Director of the Spinal Fixation
Study Group, and is presently a member of all major spine organizations,
including the
Scoliosis Research Society.
He has received numerous research and teaching awards, clinical honors and over
50 guest professorships. |

Spiro Antoniades, MD –
Associate Director & Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Maryland
Dr. Antoniades received his college education at The Johns
Hopkins University Undergraduate School of Arts and Sciences where he graduated
with Phi Beta Kappa honors. He then attended the Johns Hopkins University
Medical School. After he completed the Union Memorial/Johns
Hopkins/Shock Trauma Residency in Orthopedic Surgery, he obtained his Spine
Fellowship in Chicago under Dr. Ronald DeWald, founder of the nation’s first
spine fellowship at the Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. This
fellowship included six months of pediatric deformity training at the Chicago
Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Dr. Antoniades is certified by the
American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Following his spine fellowship, Dr. Antoniades was Instructor in
Orthopedic and Spinal Surgery at the George Washington University Medical School
in Washington, DC. He joined Dr. Edwards at the University of Maryland in
1999 as Assistant Professor. Dr. Antoniades is a member of the
North American Spine Society,
American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons and a candidate member of the
Scoliosis Research Society, and
has published scientific papers in his specialty. |

Charles C. Edwards II, MD –
Surgeon and Research Coordinator, The Maryland Spine Center
Dr. Charles C. Edwards II received his education at Washington & Lee University,
graduating with Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude and Honors in Engineering. He
attended the University of Maryland Medical School where he graduated with AOA
honors. Dr. Edwards II completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at
Emory University in Atlanta and received advanced training in the management of
adult and pediatric spinal deformity at Washington University in St. Louis.
Research interests include the management of nerve compression disorders in the
cervical spine and the treatment of major spinal deformities in children and
adults. Dr. Edwards has been the invited presenter of over forty scientific
studies at national scientific meetings.
He is an author of twenty-three research papers and textbook chapters. Research
honors include the Best Clinical Paper at the European Cervical Spine Research
Society Meeting. While a resident Dr. Edwards received the Best Resident
Research Award three consecutive years. He was awarded the Resident Research
Award by the Georgia Orthopaedic Society and the prestigious Clinical
Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Edwards II brings to the Maryland Spine Center special
expertise in the areas of minimally invasive spine surgery and microscopic
techniques. In addition, he has an extensive background in the treatment of both
spinal deformity and complex degenerative conditions using state of the art
methods and techniques. |

Mara Vucich,
DO –
Physiatrist, The Maryland Spine Center
Dr. Mara Vucich is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
specializing in treating painful spine, joint, muscle and nerve conditions
successfully without surgery. She has a special interest in evaluation and
treatment to improve function and quality of life as it relates to spinal
disorders. Some of the conditions that she treats include: arthritis and
degeneration of the spine, back and neck strains, disc herniations, whiplash,
torticollis, radiculopathy, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis,
compression fractures and myofascial pain of the neck and back.
Dr. Vucich completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland
College Park and graduated from the honors program with a BS in Biology and an
emphasis in neurophysiology. She attended medical school from 1994 to 1998, at
the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 2002, she successfully
completed her residency training at the Medical College of Ohio in Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation. Here she served as chief resident and graduate
medical education committee representative. Her research experience has included
studies in dance medicine and sports medicine. She has served as a board member
for a dance company and staffed sports medicine clinics. In her spare time, she
enjoys hiking and participating in water sports with her daughter and husband in
Anne Arundel County.
